What a year it’s been! On May 29th, the Counterculture Museum (CCM) opened its doors. Since then it’s held a whirlwind of momentous events. In August was the 60th anniversary of the Grateful Dead, bringing 100K+ people from near and far to celebrate with three days of shows by Dead & Company in Golden Gate Park. The following January, founding member Bob Weir passed away, and Deadheads again descended on the Haight for a ‘Fare Thee Well’ in his memory.

A Week of Events!
Fri. May 29th – Thurs. June 4th

Throughout the past year, the CCM hosted a wide array of events at our new space at Haight & Ashbury, gathering together friends to share their knowledge and experience, their art, films, music, poetry, and more. Our inaugural event was a talk with Dennis McNally, esteemed counterculture historian, about his latest book The Last Great Dream. We spent an evening with Dr. Dave Smith, founder of the Haight Ashbury Free Clinic, and with Linda Kelly, publisher of the Haight Street Voice and author of Deadheads. We held a memorial for the late Peggy Caserta.

There was a night of crime fiction presented by Litquake. We were treated to a performance by legendary musician, composer, and raconteur extraordinaire, David Amram. We enjoyed an afternoon of music from Vic Ruggiero and Lauren Napier (The Witch and the Burro). The was poetry celebrating the legacy of Beat poet ruth weiss. We heard stories from Merry Prankster George “Hardly Visible” Walker, and celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Trips Festival with a screening of Eric Christensen’s documentary about the event.

In fact, we were so busy this past year that we never quite got around to throwing a Grand Opening to celebrate! So perhaps it’s a bit serendipitous that our first anniversary falls on May 29th, just days before June 3rd, what would’ve been Allen Ginsberg’s 100th birthday. Seeing as Allen was such a seminal figure of not only the Beat Generation, but a transcendent influence upon the next generation, the counterculture of the 1960s, it seems kind of perfect to celebrate our first year at Haight & Ashbury together with Ginsberg’s centennial.

So we’re planning a whole week of events from Friday, May 29th through Thursday, June 4th.

Save the dates, mark your calendars, and check back for details soon!
