Allen Ginsberg died in New York City on April 5th, 1997. On April 20th, a memorial service was held at Congregation Emanu-El in San Francisco, attended by many of Allen’s closest west coast friends: Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Gary Snyder, Diane di Prima, Andrew Schelling, Anne Waldman, Joanne Kyger, Robert Hass, Mark Linenthal, Stephen Kessler, Neeli Cherkovski, and G.P. Skratz. Annice Jacoby organized a reading of “Kaddish” in the courtyard.
Jerry Gainor was also in attendance, and preserved the memorial on video. Join Gainor at the Counterculture Museum for a special screening of the video. May Allen’s memory be a blessing.
After first encountering counterculture in 1967 at age 16, here in SF for the International Science Fair, Jerry Gainor moved to the Haight 10 years later. In those 10 years a world view completely changed. Anti-war/anti-capitalist demonstrations, being part of many alternative newspapers including taking photos of Allen Ginsberg in Ann Arbor in 1974.
He spent his professional life in video-editing, restoration, videography and photography here in San Francisco.
Jerry is still a resident of the Haight 49 years and counting.
