Allen Ginsberg’s Transcendence from 1950s Beat Poet to 1960s Tribal Elder

Mon. June 29, 6pm

A Free Event for CCM Members

We promised our members an exclusive event as a followup to our Ginsberg@100 program, and we deliver! Join fellow members of the CCM for an open-forum discussion on Allen’s transcendence from Beat poet to a major leader of the Sixties counterculture, closing out Ginsberg’s Centennial celebration. Food and adult beverages will be available.

An argument can be made that the 1960s never would have played out the way they did  had Allen Ginsberg not become famous in the 1950s. Which is why the Counterculture Museum made such a big deal about celebrating Allen’s 100th birthday on June 3rd. Think about it: Allen and the Beat Generation were a major influence on many 1960s cultural icons, including Bob Dylan and the Beatles. And how many people were influenced by Dylan and the Beatles during that era? Just about everyone on the planet!

We dug deep into the vault to pull out some significant Ginsberg artifacts to display especially for this important members only event. And every single one of these items tells a unique story:

  • How to identify a true 1st printing of Howl & Other Poems from 1956. Did you know there are over a million copies of Howl in print, but only the first 1,000 copies bear this unique tell tale sign it is an authentic first printing.

  • After Allen died in 1997, many of his friends gathered n Allen’s condo in Greenwich Village to pay their last respects. Gregory Corso, Peter Orlovsky, Patti Smith and others were all in attendance. Photos of these moments of friends coming together for Allen will be on display for this event.

  • Allen’s Olivetti typewriter, including the prayer cloth he used as a dust cover, will be on display.

  • A shirt Bob Dylan gave to Allen during the 1975 Rolling Thunder Review Tour is in a glass case as well.

  • A rare copy of a 1972 New York City production playbill and other ephemera for a play based on Allen Ginsberg’s Kaddish. Allen attended the production and was observed to have been enthralled with it.

  • Did you know the term “Flower Power” is attributed to Allen Ginsberg? It’s true! Come learn about this tidbit of knowledge and more by joining us at the CCM on June 29th.

This is a members-only event. Not yet a member of the CCM? Join here!
